Free Companies & War Parties

House Rules for Non-Chaos Warbands in WHFB 3rd Edition



The Goal:

Create a small force of 40 to 60 models to do narrative battles with.


The Focus:

Have Fun! Have the chance to use a wide variety of models, heroes and small units


Set-Up:

Each Player starts off with either a Free Company or War Party.
  • Create a Hero
  • Select 10+ Rank & File Models as the core of the warband.
  • Name Hero & Company or Party


Note: Players wanting to use a Chaos Warband will use the Rules for Warbands in The Lost and the Damned ©.


Game Play:


  1. GM Provides Campaign Map & Background
  2. Players secretly select which scenario they want to try
  3. GM Details Parameters of Scenario
  4. Player's Play Scenario
  5. Post-Game Wrap-up
    1. Determine Wounded, Dead or Captured for Fallen Troops
    2. Calculate Victory Points from Objective Achieved
    3. Calculate Victory Points From Enemy Captured/Killed
    4. Identify Any Magic Items Recovered
    5. Use Experience to Level up Hero(es), Add Models, Purchase Magic Items
  6. Rinse and Repeat

4. Select Arms and Armor
5. Calculate Total Cost



  • Base Cost of Hero < 10 Points = (Basic Cost x Level) + Basic Cost + Equipment
  • Base Cost of Hero > 10 Points = (10 Points x Level) + Basic Cost + Equipment

2. Troops must ALL come from:
  • One Faction List plus Ally List OR
  • One Mercenary List

3. No Giant Creatures, No Ethereal Creature, No Creatures, No War Machines, No Cavalry or Mounted Troops

Reinforcing your Warband                                           

The following can be purchased with Victory Points or they can be gained as Rewards from scenarios.

Add Characters
  • 1x Wizard / Shaman (L. 5)
    • Can be upgraded to Level 15
  • 1x Sergeant / Sub War Chief (L. 5)
    • Can be upgraded to Level 15
  • 2x Corporal / Senior Warrior (L. 5)
    • Can be upgraded to Level 10


Add Rank & File
  • Add 3 Cavalry Models (Max: 10)
  • Add 10 Infantry Models
  • Add 1 Standard Bearer (Max: 2)
  • Add 1 Musician (Max: 2)


Add War Machines & Beasts
  • 1x Chariot (Max: 3 Models)
  • 1x War Machine + Crew (Max 1 Model)
  • 1x Ethereal Troop (Max 1 Model)
  • 1x Creature Troops (Max 3 Models)
  • 1x Giant Race (Max 3 Models)
    • Trolls, Giants, Centaurs, and Hydras (Etc.)
