Post CONjuration 2017 Report

Post CONjuration 2017 Report

Another fantastic convention in the books and a great time was had by all. Great panels, cool performers and amazing cosplay were on display through out the convention. Time was well spent with friends old and new. The staff of the convention was amazing as they are every year. Special thanks to Convention Founder Chris & Angela and Darrin the Professor for putting up with our shenanigans.

This will have been our fourth year as attendees and our third year as panelists and game hosts. We upped our number of games from last year and put on six games this year. We ran a gamut of D&D 5th Ed, AD&D 2nd Ed, and Swords & Wizardry games.

Every year I get the pre-con jitters, and fret something awful.

Would I suck as a DM? Would our games suck?Would there be conflicts with other panels?  Would we have enough players? Did we forget anything?

Then the convention started and there was literally no time to think.

The turnout was amazing as all most all of our games were full and some cases overfull.  The average game size was about 10 people per game. We had players who returned year after year to play in our games and we always see new faces coming to the table.

I ran the Sword & Wizardry games and it was a blast. All of my games were full with my first game having 14 players and my second having 10. I had the largest number of first time players who had never played ANY type of roleplaying game before. S&W is really great for this, especially when I streamlined it for Con-Play.

I did not use any pre-written adventures like I did last year. I wrote all of the adventures I ran myself this year using inspiration drawn from Spencer, Tall Tales of the Wee Folk, Harry Potter and Labyrinth. I even made mock-ups of D&D Modules for the programming guide for the Convention.

My favorite one ended up being my Groundhog Day adventure where the players were struck in a time loop and kept dying until they could prevent the assassination of the Queen of Summer.

The highlight of the games was when two of the youngest players at my table (both 13 yrs. old girls) came to me after the game. They had never played before and had such a great time they wanted to keep playing.  They asked me how they could get their hands on the stuff I used for my game. I was floored to be honest. These are the moments you live for as a Dungeon Master.

Needless to say Swords & Wizardry has an embarrassment of riches for people who want to learn to play and much of it is free. I hooked them up with the S&W Intro Rules, S&W Core (Free Version), and several of the S&W Quick Play Adventures.

One other player reached out to me since the CON and as if I could get her a copy of the adventures that I ran so she could run them for her gaming group. That was another first for me.
We are already started the planning for next year and hope to host even more games and branch out to other game systems and genres.

Review of Swords & Wizardry Continual Light

I have been a big fan of Swords & Wizardry for a while now. I used S&W Complete to run my Barrowmaze Campaign and I use it for my convention games.

Recently a new version has come out called Swords & Wizardry Continual Light.

It is intended as a even more rules lite version of S&W, but more than S&W Light.

This is something as S&W is already pretty rules lite.

 http://www.tenkarstavern.com/2017/02/what-is-swords-wizardry-continual-light.html

After reading, I can see the differences pretty clearly between the different rule sets.

My overall consensus is that this is a neat little rule set and would appeal to new players and crusty grognards alike.

Good Stuff
  • I like the adventure/level dynamic that replaces experience points.
  • It is very bare bones and doesn't waste time with tons of descriptive verbiage which is refreshing
  • Good Proofreading, I did not see any obvious typos, spelling errors, or grammar issues in my first pass.
  • Great Cover
  • Fun Artwork, Page 11 especially

Bad Stuff
  • Inconsistent Movement - NPC & Monsters have movement of 9,12,18 but PC's have movement of 90' 120' etc
  • The layout is subpar, several blank pages for no obvious reasons, lack of page numbers
  • Text in some of the sections is smashed together but more evenly spaced in others.
  • Too much artwork for no apparent reason
  • The style & ascetic of the cover is not evident in the interior
  • The character sheet in the back is pretty generic and uninspiring.

Other Stuff

  • Descending/ Ascending AC, wish they would have just picked one and have the other in a different section as optional rules
  • Missed opportunity to try a different format. Could have tried a LBB style or something different
  • If using a standard letter sized page, with they would have included page numbers and consider using columns on some of the sections
  • The entire document looks like it was cobbled together from different source materials. It could have used some smoothing.
  • For a rules lite system, it still holds on to some of the clunkier aspects of old D&D. Turning Tables and Thief abilities. Wish they would have made the turn undead a simple roll with a target number modified by the monsters HD. Condense all rogue abilities into just two skills: Thievery & Stealth

Rules of the Road: Deities

How do mortals interact with the Higher Powers?

This has been a question that players and DM's have asked for decades. One of the most popular views is the deity/follower interaction in the Forgotten Realms™ and Greyhawk™ settings which I refer to as Support Your Favorite Huggable Deity (SYFHD).

In these setting, there is direct communication and interaction between deities and their followers, which helps portray an intimate and personal relation between them. Which in turn brought about things like God Calls or God Rolls, the percentile chance that one's deity will come to the aid of the a follower. It also resulted in crap like the deity showing up in avatar form, Deus ex Machina anyone?

I am not a huge fan of the SYFHD idea. When I was younger it seemed like a cool idea, but as I have grown older I become less inclined to like it. I have never really written out my own thoughts on the whole Mortal/Deity interaction.

So here I go, please note this is just how I generally run deities in my own games and not how I think anyone else should. Every person is going to have their own take on this.

FYI, I run my game using the 3 Point Alignment System (L/N/C), but I occasionally use the 5 Point Alignment System (LG/CG/N/CE/LE). I am not a fan of the 9 or 12 point systems.

Rules of the Road: Deities

Gods, Immortals, Deities, Deva, etc. can be grouped into three broad categories: Major, Minor and Petty. Each category interacts with the mortal realm and the mortals that dwell their differently.

I also divide my deities into three classifications:

  • Chaos -> Infernal -> Cthonic

  • Law - > Celestial -> Empyrean

  • Nonaligned  -> Autonomous ->  Elemental

Major Deities

At the highest level are the major deities, beings of profuse power who rule over vast domains in the celestial, infernal or elemental spheres. In the mortal realm they are the deities that often have the most worshipers, shrines, clerics, etc.

Major deities never physical appear (manifest) in the mortal realm with one notable exception.  If a major deity appears in the mortal realm, then kiss your ass goodbye because it is the Apocalypse and the world is coming to an end.

They also never directly speak to mortals. The voice and words of the major deities is too powerful and would strike any mortal who heard it dead. They communicate to their followers via signs, portents, divination, dreams and auguries. They are almost never to the point and can be incredible cryptic.

In the direst of circumstances they may send a celestial messenger, such as an angel or demon, to convey a message. If an angel shows up with a message, you can be assured that the shit has well and truly hit the fan.

Minor Deities

Below the major deities, there exist a number of minor gods and goddess. They are often aligned with a major deity and reside in that deity’s celestial domain, but not always. Like major deities, minor ones almost never physical appear (manifest) in the mortal realm for much of the same reason as the majors one.

They have fewer worshipers, shrines and clerics and sometimes they are worshiped in conjunction with a major deity. They will very rarely speak directly to mortals. A mortal must make a Saving Throw vs. Death if a minor god ever speaks directly to them. If they fail, they die from the experience. They usually communicate to their followers via signs, portents, divination, dreams and auguries.

Petty Gods

The term Petty God covers a wide variety of entities. They can be major or minor gods that have fallen from grace. They could be long forgotten gods who worshipers have all died off. They could be demi-gods, gods tied to a specific location, a specific ideal, a specific trade. This can also cover extra-planar creatures like Djinn, Dao, Ifrit and Jann.

The one thing they all share in common is they physically exist in the mortal realm. They walk among mortals, can communicate directly with them, and directly interfere with them.  Probable the most important thing about them is that they can die. They are not invulnerable to mortals and can be slain by them.

The Immortal Instruments - Demons & Angels

In order to aid them in their endeavors, deities created a wide variety of servants to aid them. Infernal deities created the Demonic Hordes, Celestial deities created the Angelic Hosts and the Elemental deities created the Jinn throngs. Demons and Angels have corporeal bodies in their home spheres, but they are incorporeal in the mortal realms, demons appear as withering inky black clouds of smoke and angels appears as sparkling white clouds of diamond dust.

When in the mortal realm they will often take a mortal vessel, via possession, in order to communicate and interact with the physical mortal realm. They are next to impossible to kill, but can be barred, banished, exorcised and trapped. The Jinn are different and are treated as Petty Gods when they are in the mortal realm.

The Mortals Instruments – The Ecclesiastics

Priests, Priestess and Clerics are the voice of the deity in the mortal realm. They interpret the will of the deity and turn it into dogma. Through prayer, rituals and offerings these ecclesiastics demonstrate their faith to the deity. In return for this faith and piety, the deity allows them to become conduits for its divine power.

It is important to understand why I stress the word interpret above. In most fantasy RPG settings that I have seen, the clerical & priestly orders follow a set of rules laid out by their deity. My problem with this is if the god is worshiped in several different civilizations should they all not call him by the same name and practice the same rites and rituals that the deity laid out? Instead of coming up with some complicated answer involving portfolio, spheres of influence, etc. etc, I took a different approach.

The deity really does not give a shit what name you call it, how you pray, that you can only eat salted chicken at the highest point of the summer solstice. These are all mortal inventions designed to help mortals feel connected to their deity. The dogma and doctrine of a particular faith or order is designed to put the mortal in the correct mental or psychological state of mind that will allow them to connect to their deity. If a mortal rejects the practices of their faith, they lose that connection. While the deity may not care, mortals very much do.

Paladins are a special case of cray-cray and I will write about them at a later date.

Sword & Wizardry vs. Barrowmaze Session 8

Sword & Wizardry vs. Barrowmaze, Session VIII

The Campaign Continues....

Welcome brave readers to a new harrowing tale of my players once again braving the perils of the Barrowmaze.

We missed a couple of weekends due to a vacation but we are back on track.
I introduced a new wrinkle into the game. Adventuring and Roleplaying Goals that the party could earn additional experience points. The player's really seemed to enjoy them as they all managed to achieve all of the RP Goals
Allow me to once again introduce the party

The Party

All of the original and replacement members of the Crimson Blades are now dead, leaving only Bartik, the first and only hireling they hired, still alive.

Eulogy for the Crimson Blades

Be not afeard; the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices
That, if I then had waked after long sleep,
Will make me sleep again: and then, in dreaming,
The clouds methought would open and show riches
Ready to drop upon me that, when I waked,
I cried to dream again.
- Caliban, The Tempest, Act 3, Scene 2
Now introducing our new party, The Swords of Saint Ygg,
  • Sir Bryce, Human Male Paladin of St. Ygg,  Member of the Order of the Crimson Cross. A shining beacon of knighthood and chivalry. Gleaming armor and perfect teeth, the very image of a dashing hero.
  • Brother Cade, Human Male Cleric of St. Ygg, Member of the Order of the Crimson Cross. A devoted brother of the church and defender of the faithful. Boon companion and advisor to Sir Bryce.
  • Sister Jade Lotus, Human Female Monk of the Temple of Lo Pan.  Student of the White Crane Style, a tiny woman of striking beauty that is only matched by her foul mouth and broken common.  She was recently hired by Sir Bryce who witnessed her clear out an entire tavern.
  • Skylar, Human Male Fighter (Secretly a LE Assassin). Dark hooded warrior, who while waiting for his next assignment, found himself in a party of do-gooders.
  • Proximo, Human Male Guide (NPC), Hired in Helix, he led the party to the Barrow Mounds.

3rd Day of Planting, The Barrowmaze

The heroes extracted themselves from the Barrowmaze and headed back to the Village of Helix to tend to their wounds and bury the dead. During the journey in the growing dusk, Bartik disappeared and Skylar decided to go look for him. The rest of the party continued on. They would eventually reach Helix without incident and fell into their beds at the Brazen Strumpet exhausted.

4th Day of Planting, Village of Helix

The party woke up and started sorting through the treasure they had acquired. Pawning off much of the loot, several members of the party discover they finally had enough experience to level up. The party spent most of the day mending their gear and resting. Sir Bryce and Brother Cade reviewed the aspects of the quest they were on. They were not just simple adventurers; they were on a mission for the Church of St. Ygg. Late that day a small caravan arrived with some new persons of soon to be interest.

5th Day of Planting, Village of Helix

The next day rain began to fall steadily. Brother Othar of the local temple of St. Ygg was hosting a important meeting with Sir Bryce and party. Brother Othar was familiar with the reasons for Sir Bryce being in the Duchy, a quest to destroy the evil at the heart of the Barrowmaze. Reinforcement from Iron Motte had arrived the night before. These new were arrivals were introduced to the party.

  • Arcus the Arcane, Human Male Magic-User, cultured, erudite and inebriated spellcaster

  • Brother Hung Lo, Human Male Monk of the Ten Pan House, student of the Drunken Monkey Fist Style

  • Reginald Hammond, Human Squire, Member of the Order of the Crimson Cross (NPC)

  • Rogyer Murtaugh, Human Man-at-Arms (NPC)
  • Martyn Riggs, Human Man-at-Arms (NPC)
After introductions were made, Squire Hammond presented a holy artifact to Sir Bryce, the Finger Bone of St. Ygg. This item was given to aid the paladin in his quest to destroy the evil in the Barrowmaze. In addition to this they had laid in a large amount of supplies.
=======================================================================

Blessed Finger Bone of Saint Ygg

This most holies of holies is the actual finger bone of Saint Ygg. When Saint Ygg, transcended and became the God of Righteousness he left his mortal shell behind. His bones have become powerful relics and are greatly prized.

  • vs. Neutral 4d6 Dmg
  • vs. Lawful 2d6  Dmg.

Sister Jade Lotus, tired of the meeting and stepped outside for some fresh air. As she looked across the village she noticed a man walking towards here. She recognized him as being a fellow countryman from the Kingdom of Syama. He stopped in front of her, looked her in the eye and spit on the ground. He proclaimed himself Song Hu, and he had come to avenge their master.

FIGHT!!

A classic martial arts duel proceed and there was much fun had by all. Brother Hung Lo jumped in and saved Jade. His reasoning, a chance to whoop some White Crane butt. After being questioned by the Duke's Guard about the fight, they were released.

6th Day of Planting, The Barrowmoors.

The newly reformed party set forth to once more brave the Barrowmaze. During their travels they came across a camp that had been ransacked and the inhabitants murdered. They followed a trail and soon caught up with a raiding party of lizardmen who had a captive from the camp. A bloody battle ensued with them. The party managed to best the creatures with only their henchmen Riggs dying. The captive turned  out to be a Priestess of Herne who helped the heal the wounded party members.

Highlights

  • Hung Lo rolling 5 critical hits
  • Proximo the torch bearer managed to kill 2 lizardmen

The party decided to turn back and escort the priestess back to Helix.

=======================================================================

Due to commitments with work and school, I need to give up the DM seat to focus on school. So this campaign is going into hiatus for a bit. One of my players who just finished school, will be bringing back our 2nd AD&D Forgotten Realms Campaign.

Or How I stopped being afraid and embraced the carnage.

The time has come again for my players to once again brave the horrors of the Barrowmaze. The game got off to a delayed start as we had a couple of birthdays to celebrate.

Allow me to once again introduce the party

The Party

Session Seven (Spoiler Alerts)

Ivana calmly cleaned her nails with her dagger while she listened to the death screams of her party. She smiled when she heard Fitch's garbled scream. Bartik looked around and then looked at Ivana and then asked "What now Boss?"

DM Note: As part of Ivana's backgrounds and dark secret, she was secretly a coward and hated elves. She was never going to get involved in that fight and if the half-elf got killed, bonus!

Ivana pondered this for a minute, as she sat and thought. It was then that she spied an approaching party of adventurers.

"Oh look a fresh crop of patsies....oh I mean "Our Saviours"

The approaching party was a group of humans led by a dashing warrior,

DM Note: All the player's whose characters died last session had drawn new characters from the Fresh Meat Folder. Never in a million years could I ever have a party like this again.

Now introducing the

Swords of Saint Ygg

============================================

Sir Bryce, Human Male Paladin of St. Ygg, A shining beacon of knighthood and chivalry. Gleaming armor and perfect teeth, the very image of a dashing hero.

Brother Cade, Human Male Cleric of St. Ygg, A devoted brother of the church and defender of the faithful. Boon companion and advisor to Sir Bryce.

Squire Adric, Human Male Squire, (NPC) Sir Bryce's faithful squire, one man cheering section and religious bigot. Constantly reminds everyone how great Saint Ygg is and how Sir Bryce is a beacon of light and holiness.  Everything that happens good or bad, he will exclaim because "God Wills It".

GOD WILLS IT!!!
Sister Jade Lotus, Human Female Monk of the Temple of Lo Pan.  A tiny woman of striking beauty which is only matched by her foul mouth and broken common. Hired by Sir Bryce after witnessing her clear out an entire tavern.
You! Round Eye! You lookie at my titties.

Skylar, Human Male Fighter (Secretly a LE Assassin). Dark hooded warrior, who while waiting for his next assignment, found himself in a party of do-gooders.
of course I am a good aligned fighter! Just look at me
Proximo, Human Male Guide (NPC), Hired in Helix, he led the party to the Barrow Mounds.

and last but not least

Felipe Consuela Conchita

Alvarado Galarraga de Pena Gonzales

aka Consuela Banana Hammock,

Human Drag Queen Bard, (Secretly a Neutral Assassin).

Shit, need I say more? And yes, she had the fruit hat, Brother Cade kept picking fruit off it.

"Chica, Chica Boom Chic," "O Tic-Tac do Meu Coração,"

The meeting between Ivana and the Swords of St Ygg was one of the funniest things I had ever seen roleplayed in a while. Between Ivana mistaking Sister Jade for a skinny halfling, to much sexual innuendo it was a good 30 minutes of pure hilarity.

Ivana gave them a sob story about how her party has been attacked and asked Sir Bryce for help. He,  of course, could not refuse and led the charge to finish of the animated statues. It was a short fight. The party looted the tomb and buried the dead.

The Tomb of the Dark Arts

The party decided to explore some of  the other barrows and quickly found a sealed tomb. They began to crack it open when two Coffer Corpses came shambling up.

DM Note: This is a unique monster that I had never seen before, Barrowmaze Complete has a Monster Manual Section that has a lot of monsters I had never seen before. There is however no entry for Pterodactyls, which is an listed random encounter, they are also missing from the LL and S&W rulebooks. An minor oversight, Mr. Gillespie's I would love to know what you used.

Luckily Consuela had acquired the magical longsword from the previous barrow and was able to dispatch the two creature, which were not affected by normal weapons. In addition, the party all made their fear saves. They finished cracking open the tomb and acquired a magical book which they did not open. With nothing else of interest, they decided to check out one more barrow before heading back to town.

The Mound of Secret Stairs

The party searched the already looted tomb, Ivana was able to discover the trigger that caused a secret staircase to be reveled. The party got into a proper marching order and descended into the depths. They soon find themselves entering the Forbidden Antechambers of the  Barrowmaze.

DM (Me): OK Gang, I need a marching order and I need to know what you are carrying.
Sir Bryce (Clark): You mean what we are carrying in our packs?
DM (Me): No, I need to know what you are wielding.in your hands.
Jade: (Val): He is wielding JUSTICE!!!

The Tabernacle of Forgotten Gods

The party immediately encounters a group of skeletons roaming the hallways and gets the drop on them. The fight goes quickly. Skylar did manage to fumble and his sword skittered into the tabernacle. Ivana, Brother Cade, and Skylar explored the tabernacle while Sir Bryce, Consuela and Jade searched the skeletons and a closet off the hallway.

Ivana missed finding a pit trap and it took the combined efforts of Brother Cade, Sklylar and Jade to pull her out. While this was going on, Consuela and Proximo stirred up a nest of Giant Centipedes. Consuela was bitten twice and fell out of the closet (that got a lot of laughs). Having failed two saves, Consuela died. Sir Bryce and the three hirelings managed to dispatch the rest of the centipedes.

The rest of the party gathered around poor Consuela and Brother Cade began to give him/her last rites. Ardic, once again, began to go on about how great Sir Bryce was and how it was god's will that Consuela die. Ivana has been listening to this insipid ponce go on and on. He had not stopped prattling since she meet this group.

Ivana chopped the head off one of the centipedes and while no one was looking backstabbed the squire with the poison pincers in the hopes of making it look like he had been bitten during the fight,
However Jade and Sir Bryce saw her do it. Sir Bryce drew his sword and killed Ivana with one blow.Skylar tried to stop him but barely managed not to get cut down in the process.

Shocked at the brutal murder of Ardic, the party decided to return to the town of Helix to give Consuela and Ardic proper burials. Ivana's body, they stripped and dumped into the pit trap.

DM Note: Some people may wonder why I let this happen. Ivana was played the way she was designed, a chaotic evil thief. All of the players were cool with how things were handled and it was considered good roleplay. My players were more upset that I killed Consuela.
TO BE CONTINUED.........
