Sword & Wizardry vs. Barrowmaze Session 7

Sword & Wizardry vs. The Barrowmaze, Session VII

Or How I stopped being afraid and embraced the carnage.

The Campaign Continues....

The time has come again for my players to once again brave the horrors of the Barrowmaze. The game got off to a delayed start as we had a couple of birthdays to celebrate.

Allow me to once again introduce the party

The Party

All of the original members of the Crimson Blades are now dead, leaving only Ivana who was a late addition to the group and Bartik, the first and only hireling they hired, still alive.
  • Ivana Humpalot, Dwarf Thief, chaotic evil buxom dwarven lass whose murderous intent is only rivaled by her libido.
  • Bartik, Human Guide (NPC), promoted to henchmen for surviving this long

Deceased Party Members

  • Al`Kashid Jaffar Rahim Abdul Grazzzhalaz AKA Al-Jeezra, Human Paladin, A magnificent warrior beloved by all (except Roscoe) and scion of Horus, accidently killed by Shy Greenleaf

  • Ehith Splinterra, Elven Magic-User, 1,400 year old elven 1st level wizard, killed by skeleton

  • Jarvis, Human Cleric of Herne, also known as Jarvis the Shitty Tailor, killed by centipedes
  • Splendiferous Finch, Half-Elf Fighter/Magic-User, known for fantastic hair which upon his death was discovered to be a wig, impaled with spear

Session Seven (Spoiler Alerts)

Ivana calmly cleaned her nails with her dagger while she listened to the death screams of her party. She smiled when she heard Fitch's garbled scream. Bartik looked around and then looked at Ivana and then asked "What now Boss?"

DM Note: As part of Ivana's backgrounds and dark secret, she was secretly a coward and hated elves. She was never going to get involved in that fight and if the half-elf got killed, bonus!

Ivana pondered this for a minute, as she sat and thought. It was then that she spied an approaching party of adventurers

"Oh look a fresh crop of patsies....oh I mean "Our Saviours"

The approaching party was a group of humans led by a dashing warrior,

DM Note: All the player's whose characters died last session had drawn new characters from the Fresh Meat Folder. Never in a million years could I ever have a party like this again.

Now introducing the

Swords of Saint Ygg

============================================

Sir Bryce, Human Male Paladin of St. Ygg, A shining beacon of knighthood and chivalry. Gleaming armor and perfect teeth, the very image of a dashing hero.

Brother Cade, Human Male Cleric of St. Ygg, A devoted brother of the church and defender of the faithful. Boon companion and advisor to Sir Bryce.

Squire Adric, Human Male Squire, (NPC) Sir Bryce's faithful squire, one man cheering section and religious bigot. Constantly reminds everyone how great Saint Ygg is and how Sir Bryce is a beacon of light and holiness.  Everything that happens good or bad, he will exclaim because "God Wills It".

GOD WILLS IT!!!
Sister Jade Lotus, Human Female Monk of the Temple of Lo Pan.  A tiny woman of striking beauty which is only matched by her foul mouth and broken common. Hired by Sir Bryce after witnessing her clear out an entire tavern.
You! Round Eye! You lookie at my titties.

Skylar, Human Male Fighter (Secretly a LE Assassin). Dark hooded warrior, who while waiting for his next assignment, found himself in a party of do-gooders.
of course I am a good aligned fighter! Just look at me
Proximo, Human Male Guide (NPC), Hired in Helix, he led the party to the Barrow Mounds.

and last but not least

Felipe Consuela Conchita

Alvarado Galarraga de Pena Gonzales

aka Consuela Banana Hammock,

Human Drag Queen Bard, (Secretly a Neutral Assassin)

Shit, need I say more? And yes, she had the fruit hat, Brother Cade kept picking fruit off it.

"Chica, Chica Boom Chic," "O Tic-Tac do Meu Coração,"

The meeting between Ivana and the Swords of St Ygg was one of the funniest things I had ever seen roleplayed in a while. Between Ivana mistaking Sister Jade for a skinny halfling, to much sexual innuendo it was a good 30 minutes of pure hilarity.

Ivana gave them a sob story about how her party has been attacked and asked Sir Bryce for help. He,  of course, could not refuse and led the charge to finish of the animated statues. It was a short fight. The party looted the tomb and buried the dead.

The Tomb of the Dark Arts

The party decided to explore some of  the other barrows and quickly found a sealed tomb. They began to crack it open when two Coffer Corpses came shambling up.

DM Note: This is a unique monster that I had never seen before, Barrowmaze Complete has a Monster Manual Section that has a lot of monsters I had never seen before. There is however no entry for Pterodactyls, which is an listed random encounter, they are also missing from the LL and S&W rulebooks. An minor oversight, Mr. Gillespie's I would love to know what you used.

Luckily Consuela had acquired the magical longsword from the previous barrow and was able to dispatch the two creature, which were not affected by normal weapons. In addition, the party all made their fear saves. They finished cracking open the tomb and acquired a magical book which they did not open. With nothing else of interest, they decided to check out one more barrow before heading back to town.

The Mound of Secret Stairs

The party searched the already looted tomb, Ivana was able to discover the trigger that caused a secret staircase to be reveled. The party got into a proper marching order and descended into the depths. They soon find themselves entering the Forbidden Antechambers of the  Barrowmaze.

DM (Me): OK Gang, I need a marching order and I need to know what you are carrying.
Sir Bryce (Clark): You mean what we are carrying in our packs?
DM (Me): No, I need to know what you are wielding.in your hands.
Jade: (Val): He is wielding JUSTICE!!!

The Tabernacle of Forgotten Gods

The party immediately encounters a group of skeletons roaming the hallways and gets the drop on them. The fight goes quickly. Skylar did manage to fumble and his sword skittered into the tabernacle. Ivana, Brother Cade, and Skylar explored the tabernacle while Sir Bryce, Consuela and Jade searched the skeletons and a closet off the hallway.

Ivana missed finding a pit trap and it took the combined efforts of Brother Cade, Sklylar and Jade to pull her out. While this was going on, Consuela and Proximo stirred up a nest of Giant Centipedes. Consuela was bitten twice and fell out of the closet (that got a lot of laughs). Having failed two saves, Consuela died. Sir Bryce and the three hirelings managed to dispatch the rest of the centipedes.

The rest of the party gathered around poor Consuela and Brother Cade began to give him/her last rites. Ardic, once again, began to go on about how great Sir Bryce was and how it was god's will that Consuela die. Ivana has been listening to this insipid ponce go on and on. He had not stopped prattling since she meet this group.

Ivana chopped the head off one of the centipedes and while no one was looking backstabbed the squire with the poison pincers in the hopes of making it look like he had been bitten during the fight,
However Jade and Sir Bryce saw her do it. Sir Bryce drew his sword and killed Ivana with one blow.Skylar tried to stop him but barely managed not to get cut down in the process.

Shocked at the brutal murder of Ardic, the party decided to return to the town of Helix to give Consuela and Ardic proper burials. Ivana's body, they stripped and dumped into the pit trap.

DM Note: Some people may wonder why I let this happen. Ivana was played the way she was designed, a chaotic evil thief. All of the players were cool with how things were handled and it was considered good roleplay. My players were more upset that I killed Consuela.

Reaper Bones II - Pictures

Somehow I completely failed to mention the fact that I got my Reaper Bones II Kickstarter.

I have had it for at least six weeks and have already started to use some of the miniatures in my D&D game.

Needless to say my miniature collection keeps growing, I have not painting much due to work, school and Borderlands The Prequel.

I started this blog to inspire me to paint, funny huh.

This is one I am really excited about. The only problem is to where to store it, this thing is massive

What it should look like when it is painted and assembled

I am also excited about this one, same problem, where to store it.

What it should look like when assembled and painted

The whole kit and caboodle

At the bottom of the last picture you can see this miniature still in the bag, another massive painting project.

Kickstarter - The Sinister Stone of Sakkara

So once again here comes Kickstarter with another deal I can't pass up

Autarch LLC the publisher of the Adventurer Conqueror King SystemTM  was kickstarting its first published adventure scenario set in the Auran Empire, the implied setting of ACKS.

The Sinister Stone of Sakkara is a ready-to-play adventure scenario presented for use with theAdventurer Conqueror King System™ (ACKS™). It is readily compatible with other fantasy role-playing games built on the same core rules, but is specifically designed to highlight the features and mechanics of ACKS.The adventure is intended for six to ten characters of 1st to 3rd level, with a combined total of 8-12 levels of experience in the party. In the tradition of classic TSR adventure scenarios such as The Keep on the Borderlands and The Village of HommletThe Sinister Stone of Sakkarafeatures a detailed starting base and small wilderness sandbox in addition to a dungeon.
  • The adventure scenario is approximately 40,000 words.
  • The starting base includes a villa, headquarters, hospital, chapterhouse, infantry barracks, cavalry barracks, bathhouse, traveler's inn, and forum, all mapped and keyed.
  • The dungeon features two levels, the first with 75 rooms and the second with 39 rooms, mapped and keyed, along with two custom wandering monster tables.
  • Additional delights include the "Adventurer Motivation Table", "Random Philosophical Meditations Table", "Profligate Imperial Banquet Table," and "Settlement Demand Modifiers Table" (for the mercantile venturers!), as well as a menu of options available at an Auran fast-food restaurant, excerpts of Zaharan prayer-verses, and more!

I had gotten the Core Rulebook and Player's Companion last year in pdf format. For those who don't know about the ACK system, the best way I can describe it is as follows

Take the Classic D&D Rules Cyclopedia and turn it up to 11

It has to be one of the better designed and laid out rules books I have ever seen. The rules are streamlined and flow very well. The attention to detail is amazing. As a DM, the section on kingdom design is awesome. One of the key features of this ruleset, the Economics. From the cost of a sword, to how much a blacksmith makes a day, it all balances out. Laced through out the rule book are little glimpse of the Auran Empire the default setting for ACK. one of the Bonus Goals for this Kickstarter is a 2,500 word Auran Primer. There is a great little blog post by the writer of ACK that give a snapshot of the Auran Empire Setting.

I purchased the:

CONQUEROR WITH VASSALS: This is a special bundle for new fans who want to dive into the Adventurer Conqueror King System. In addition to all the benefits of Conqueror level above, you get the ACKS hardcover and PDF as well as the Player's Companion hardcover and PDF.

I will be writing up a preview of the adventure once I get it.

The Heroic Adventurers

But in reality what I get is this

Slap Stick Inc.
End of Session 5

After the tragic deaths of Ridley, Al`Kashid and Shy, the rest of party began to strip their fallen comrades of their gear and money. It was during this process a trio of adventurers came along. They introduced themselves as Jiminy, an albino magic-user and his two ranger bodyguards Wart and Seamus. They had also been harvesting spider silk in the forest. They had also been trading with the elves of the Blackened Forest, The two parties after a brief discussion decided to join forces.

The newly combined party headed back to Helix, to re-arm and re-equip. Thier three friends were all given last rites and proper burials.

Session Six (Spoiler Alert)

After a couple of days in town, the adventurers joined together to return to the Barrow Mounds.

The journey to the Barrow Mounds were uneventful. They encountered no one or thing on their journey. Upon reaching the fields of barrow mounds, they went back to the sealed mound they had been working on opening but never finished due to the attack by the troll.

The Mound of Ancient Urns

The party finished unsealing the mound and carefully entered it. Ivana searched but found no traps or monsters. They wasted no time in looting the room.taking several valuable urns. Exiting the mound they looked around for their next destination. They decided to head east to a mound that sat right on the edge of the moors.

The Statue Mound

This mound was sealed just the like the last one. Using a sledgehammer and crowbar, they worked on unsealing the mound. All of the noise they were making soon attracted the attention of three hungry crocodiles lurking in the moors.

The heroes drew their weapons and defended themselves. The heroes were on a roll and three different players rolled criticals hits and the reptiles were quickly dispatched. They waste no time in dressing the crocodiles.

The party finished opening up the mound, lit torches and descended down into the tomb. The crypt was filled with over a foot of water much to the dismay of the players. Roscoe led the way followed by the rest of the party.

Exploring the antechamber, the party searched for hidden doors, traps and monsters. Ivana was able to locate a secret door and secretly secured a diamond ring for herself. While the rest of the party worked at opening a door.

Opening the one visible door, they discovered it led into a chamber with a Urn on a pedestal next to a stone tablet. Roscoe waded into the room and promptly step on a pit trap falling into a spiked pit trap.

DM NOTE: In the book, it states that the bottom of the pit trap also is covered in yellow mold. Assuming that the pit trap some how had not filled with water, when the trap door opens all of the knee high water would flood in. A rough estimate is that is about 100 gallons of water that is immediately flowing into the pit trap neutralizing the yellow mold. An interesting side effect is that anyone standing around the trap are going to get sucked into it.

Roscoe was gravely wounded, but the rest of the party remained on their feet. Their quick thinking enabled them to rescue Roscoe from the pit trap. The use of one of their precious healing potions saved him and gets him back on his feet..

Ivana discovered a 2nd secret door in the antechamber and the party decided to investigates. They examined the massive statue of a elf warrior fighting three lizardmen. Of great interest to the party was the glowing longsword in the elf warrior's hand. Splendiferous removed the longsword and the three lizardman statutes came to life and attacked the party..

The ensuing fight was brutal and vicious. Splendiferous and Seamus both managed to fumble and stun themselves during the fight. Seamus stumbling around in a daze accidently struck Splendiferous. Seamus never got a chance to recover as he was cut down by the lizardman statue.

Roscoe was exchanging clanging blows with one of the statues. His armor, the refitted platemail once belonging to Al'Kashid  had been damaged by the pit trap. The armor soon betrayed him. The lizardman's spear found a chink in the armor and drive home skewering the fighter.

Wart fought on and managed to bring down one of the statues. He then proceeded to move to assist Jiminy with the statue he as fighting. Wart swung his sword with all of his strength and.......

  • DM: What did you roll?
  • Wart (Clark): uhmmmm, I rolled a "1"
  • All of the Players: Shiitttttttttt
  • DM: Let's see, Roll me a 12.......

.............missed the statue completely and shears off the top of Jiminy's head, killing him instantly.Jiminy has a stunned expression on his face as he collapsed and his brains slid out.

DM NOTE: This is now the second time that Clark has killed Jim;s character with a critical fumble. The last time it was Clark's Shy the Halfling killing Jim's Al-Kashid the Paladin.

Ivana and Bartik fled the chamber and made their way outside. Wart the ranger fought on, crushing one statue and hammering on another. .Splendiferous shook off the cobwebs and made a dash for the exit, for a brief moment hope gleamed as he ran. Then a spear erupts from his chest as one of the remaining statues piercesd him from behind. Wart, the last remaining fighter fell to the lizardman statues as his wild swings could never connect.

Ivana and Bartik made it back to the surface. Looking around they spotted a group of adventures approaching.

Sword & Wizardry vs. The Barrowmaze Session 5

Sword & Wizardry vs. The Barrowmaze Session V

The Campaign Continues....

..............and takes a turn into the absurd

Heading into our fifth session and I will give you all a chance to guess what happened!

Your are correct!!!

Once again I was short

.................two players

........ again

It is at this point that I shall reintroduce the party.

  • Jarvis, Human Cleric of Herne, also known as Jarvis the Shitty Tailor
  • Splendiferous Finch, Half-Elf Fighter/Magic-User, known for having fantastic hair
  • Rosco Coltrane, Human Fighter and wannabe Paladin
  • Ehith Splinterra, Elven Magic-User, 1,400 year old elven 1st level wizard
  • Ridley, Human Fighter, Busty Young Female Fighter, Apple of Jarvis's Eye
  • Sir Grunky Peeps, Human Fighter, A nobleman and very loud talker, likes to refer to himself in the 3rd person.
  • Al`Kashid Jaffar Rahim Abdul Grazzzhalaz AKA Al-Jeezra, Human Paladin, A magnificent warrior beloved by all (except Roscoe) and scion of Horus
  • Shy Greenleaf, Male Halfling Thief and pint sized killing machine
  • Ivana Humpalot, Dwarf Thief, buxom dwarven lass who lives up to her name
  • Bartik, Human Torchbearer and Guide (NPC)

Session 5

The party decided to take a break from exploring the Barrowmaze and decided to make some gold harvesting spider silk from the Blackened Forest for Valerion the town elf. The elf was a bowyer and fletcher who also wove fantastic items from spider silk. His supply was low and he need someone to go with him to gather more silk.

Sir Grunky was still in Ironmotte and had discovered the joys of Turkish Black Tar Heroin. Ivana the dwarf decided she had caused enough ruckus that she needed to lay low for a while. The party had recently rented an farmhouse in town to be their home base, so she stayed behind to "supervise" the workman fixing the roof.

The party's journey itself to the forest was uneventful and they were able to find a cluster of trees covered in silky spiderwebs. Roscoe, Ridley and Shay immediately climbed the nearest trees to begin cutting down the webs. Valerion, Fitch and Bartick hung back and were on guard for attacks from the ground.

DM Note: Brace yourself true believers this is where it goes to ludicrous speed

Al`Kashid decided to head to a tree on the far side of the tree cluster. He climbed the tree with ease and then....

[Me] So what do you do?

[Jim] I will slice through a thick strand of the silk. Then I will use it to swing down to the ground in a heroic flourish.

[Me] . . . . .Uhm OK.....Roll me a D20 to slice through the strand, grab it and swing to the ground.

DM Note: I figured this would be an easy task, so I set the difficulty at a 5 or better on a d20.  As long as he did not roll a 1 and fumble, piece of cake, right?

[Jim] Rolls Dice.........I rolled a 1

Kitty can't believe it

[All the other players] "Oh Shit!!!!"

Al`Kashid swung his sword at the strand but lost his footing and instead his sword became entangled in the web. His efforts to free the sword caused the whole web to tremble. Soon dog sized spider descended out of the top of the trees and attacked the party.

The spiders attacked first. One spider jumped on Ridley, sinking it's fangs into her face, pumping her full of poison. Ridley then fell out of the tree, landing on the ground a twitchy dying heap. The rest of the spider's attacks on the party all missed.

Valerion the Elf and Fitch fired arrows & magic missiles slaying the spider and avenging their comrade. Roscoe swing and wounded the spider attacking him.

Then it was Shy the Halfling's turn to spring into action. Taking his drawn dagger, he swings wildly at the spider and...........

[DM] What did you roll to Hit?

[Clark] "head bowed down" I rolled a "One"

[All the other players] "Sucks for you man!!!!"

[DM] "Pulls out my critical fumble table" Roll me a D12

[Clark]: I rolled a "Twelve "

[All the other players] "Oh Crap!!!!"

[DM] Wow, that is a Major FUBAR!, Never had that happen before, Roll D12 Twice more.

[Clark] I rolled a "Ten " and a "Eleven"

[DM] OK, I am going to need you to roll me a To-Hit Roll and I am going to need some saving throws from the following people......

Exactly

........Shy completely missed the spider. In fact, Shy lost his footing and with his wild swing he accidentally flung his dagger away. It sailed through the air and stuck the party's  paladin Al`Kashid directly in the eye, point first, killing him instantly as it pierced his brain. Shy then proceeded to fall out of the tree and landed on his neck killing himself.

The rest of the party quickly got over the shock of what happened and wiped the rest of the spiders out. Rosco and Fitch looked over the carnage and the loss of life...........

[Roscoe] I got dibs on the paladin's platemail

[Fitch] Holy Shit, he had over 500 gold pieces on him, you know I think we have been going about this all wrong.

[Roscoe] What do you mean?

[Fitch] We have made more gold off of our dead comrades then we have treasure hunting. Not to mention what we can get for all of their stuff once we sell it in town.

[Roscoe]:We could start our own business selling second hand adventuring gear.

During their conversation, an albino magic-user accompanied by two rangers walked out of the woods.and approached them.

Sword & Wizardry vs. The Barrowmaze - Session 3 & 4

Sword & Wizardry vs. The Barrowmaze - Session III & IV

The Campaign Continues

Picking up where I left off last time, I will detail my first experience with a Chaotic Evil Player Character and watch as my players come close to a TPK thanks to 1 HD Spiders and bad rolls.

It is at this point that I shall reintroduce the party.
  • Jarvis, Human Cleric of Herne, also known as Jarvis the Shitty Tailor
  • Splendiferous Finch, Half-Elf Fighter/Magic-User, known for having fantastic hair
  • Rosco Coltrane, Human Fighter

Session 3 Continued

Finch, Ridley, Al`Kashid, Shy, Ivana and Bartik had taken refuge in the Centipede Barrow as it was the safest place in the Barrowmoors. Barricading the entrance they decided to rest for about 8 hours, tend to their wounds, and gave the spell casters to memorize and pray for fresh spells.

DM Note: I have been keeping a pretty close track of time, dates and weather. The party rest in the early afternoon, the end result is they headed out when it was still dark outside like 4 in the morning dark. This would have interesting results since I was still rolling on the nighttime random encounter table

The party moved out in the predawn hours and began to explore the moors again; they soon came across a sealed barrow. Using crowbars, they began to remove the entrance. Their attempt however was interrupted, a swamp troll attracted by all the noise the party was making moved to attack.

The party decided to flee instead of fight. Shy and Ivana melted into the marsh grass and hid from the troll. The rest of the party fled to the Centipede Barrow. The troll caught up with them and Ridley was stuck and fell unconscious from her wounds. Al`Kashid grabbed Ridley and Bartik, flinging all of them down into the barrow. The troll attempted to get in but was too big to fit.

Shy and Ivana had quietly snuck and watched as the troll attempted to get into the barrow. Deciding to stay hidden and they watched as the troll, in a rage, collapsed the entrance of the barrow trapping their companions. In the barrow, Al`Kashid was knocked unconscious during the collapse.

Cliff Hanger Ending... Dun Dun Duahhhhh

Session 4

We gathered together again and once again I was short two players. Sir Grunky and Al`Kashid were both trapped in PC Comas. However Roscoe was awake and now I had a party split into three groups.

Yay…………DM’s Worst Nightmare

Roscoe the Fighter awoke in the village of Helix feeling recovered from his illness. Asking the whereabouts of his companions he discovered that they never returned from the Barrowmaze. Deciding to track them down, he hired Hinden, the local miller and the miller’s son to help him track his party. These two NPC's were both rangers and members of the local guard.

Meanwhile, Shy and Ivana decided to run back to Helix to seek help. Unfortunately the Troll spotted them and gave pursuit. The troll managed to catch up with the two thieves however luck was on their side. Roscoe and his ranger guides who where nearby arrived in the nick of time. Combined they managed to slay the troll.

The thieves then leads them all back to the Centipede Barrow. They were soon working to dig out the rest of the party. They were able to free the rest of the party. With the paladin still unconscious, they decided to return to the village Helix.

Once they got back to the village, they paid the clerics of the Church of St. Igg to heal their wounded comrades. The rest of the party returned to the Brazen Strumpet to divide the loot they had gotten. Roscoe went to see if he could get some better armor. Hijinks ensued as Ivana and Shy went on a mini crime spree in Helix.

DM Note: I have to learn how to deal with player characters that are of Evil Alignment.  I was unprepared for the Deviltry that ensued. I never expected them to try to rob the church and try to steal all of the healing magic. I made up some stuff and they failed but they felt like I was punishing them for playing their characters. They accidently destroyed some holy oil that was needed for a special ceremony that the church needed for the last day of Growfest.

The party found out that the elves of the Blackened Forest might have some more of this holy oit. They also decided to make some “safe” money by making a trek in to the Blackened Forest to gather spider silk.

Session 5 Coming Soon
